Il primo episodio di King of Fighters a girare su Atomiswave, l'hardware sul quale SNK Playmore svilupperá la maggior parte dei suoi giochi futuri.

La grafica dei personaggi, le mosse e i suoni sono molto simili a quelli di "The King of Fighters 2002 - Challenge to Ultimate Battle".
Come nei precedenti episodi, i personaggi sono controllati con 2 pulsanti per i pugni e due per i calci ma c'é anche un pulsante aggiuntivo per l'attivazione del nuovo "Heat Mode" (Modalitá fervore), che potenzia gli attacchi del tuo personaggio ma al tempo stesso gli prosciuga l'energia vitale.
La configurazione dei pulsanti e le impostazioni software possono essere cambiate per rispondere alle necessitá di tutti i tipi di luoghi di installazione del gioco.
Leona, Ralph and Clark sono personaggi giocabili nel gioco "Metal Slug Survivors" per telefoni cellulari della serie Foma 90x.
